Getting started with I’m Okay in two minutes

From first launch to your first “I’m okay”: the steps to set up the app and connect with your loved ones, one at a time.

I’m Okay is designed to be ready in a few minutes, even for people who aren’t fond of technology.

Here’s how to get started, one step at a time.

1. First launch

Open the app and follow the few opening screens.

We ask for the name your loved ones will see and your date of birth, because the app is for people aged 16 or over.

Your phone number is optional: if you add it, your contacts can call you with one tap.

Then the app asks for permission to send you notifications.

Say yes: without notifications you wouldn’t know when a loved one tells you they’re okay.

The three-day free trial starts by itself, with every feature. No card needed.

2. Connect with your code

Everyone has a personal code, in the form OKAY-XXXX-XXXX.

Open the Invite tab and tap WhatsApp, Message or More to send it to anyone you like.

If someone has already sent you theirs, tap “Have a code?” and type it in.

The connection goes both ways: from then on you can both see each other.

You can have up to 20 contacts, and either of you can remove the connection whenever you like.

3. Your first “I’m okay”

Go back to Home.

In the middle is the big green button: tap it.

In a moment your loved ones get a notification, and on screen you see their faces light up.

Done: from today you can do it whenever you like, even several times a day.

4. If you like, a check-in time

Many people stop here, and that’s perfectly fine.

But if you live alone, or want more peace of mind, you can choose a check-in time in settings.

If you don’t tap “I’m okay” by that time, plus a grace period, your loved ones get an alert with your last location.

We wrote a guide just for this: Check-in times with automatic alerts: when they’re worth it.

5. Two things to know

“I’m not okay”, the button with the red outline, calls your trusted contact.

It doesn’t alert anyone: it’s for when you need a friendly voice.

SOS, the last tab at the bottom, is for emergencies.

Hold the circle for three seconds: all your loved ones get your location and the phone calls 112.

If you let go early, nothing happens.

One last tip

From settings, send a test notification to yourself or to a contact.

You’ll see the line change to “Delivered” within a few seconds.

If you’re on Android and the notification doesn’t arrive, follow the battery guide for your phone’s brand in the app.
