Privacy policy
I’m Okay sends your loved ones an “I’m okay” and, if you miss a check-in or ask for help, an alert with your location. We keep only what that takes, on our server in Europe, and delete it quickly.
This policy covers I’m Okay, the iPhone and Android app published by STARS S.R.L. to let your loved ones know you’re okay, and the imokay.pro website.
It explains what data we use, where it goes and how long it stays.
In short: a name, your contacts, the times you choose and, only in automatic alerts and with SOS, your location.
No advertising, no analytics in the app, no tracking.
Who the controller is
The data controller is STARS S.R.L., Via Mario Vinciguerra 75, 00128 Rome (RM), Italy, VAT and tax code 18548941006.
Email: info@stars.srl · Certified email (PEC): stars@namirialpec.it
How it works, briefly
You connect with other people who use the app, up to 20, by swapping a personal code: the link goes both ways and either of you can remove it.
When you tap “I’m okay”, your contacts get a notification straight away.
If you want, you set one or more check-in times: if you don’t tap “I’m okay” by that time plus the grace period you chose, your contacts get an alert with your last location.
For all this to work even when the app is closed, the data goes through our server.
What data we use
- Profile: the name you choose, your date of birth, your phone number if you decide to add it, your personal code, language and time zone. Your date of birth is only used to check the minimum age and nobody else sees it. Your number, if you add it, is visible to your contacts, so they can call you and pick you as the trusted contact for “I’m not okay”.
- Contacts and preferences: who you’re connected with, who gets automatic alerts and in what order, who you’ve muted, and the permission to set up your app if you give it to someone.
- Times, return and pause: your check-in times, reminders, grace period, any “back by…” time and the dates of “I’m away from… to…”, which your contacts see while the pause is under way or coming up.
- App signals: when you tapped “I’m okay” and the last time your phone checked in, to show your contacts and for the “quiet phone” alert, which you can turn on even without a check-in time.
- Battery: your battery level reaches the server only when it drops to 5% or less and the phone isn’t charging. If you have a check-in time or the “quiet phone” alert on and aren’t on a pause, the people who get your automatic alerts get one, at most every 12 hours. The level isn’t kept: only the time of the last alert is.
- Change history: if you give a contact permission to set up your app, every change they make (times and reminders, language, gift code, “Button only”) is kept in a history with their name and the time. Only you see it, in the app.
- Notifications: the token Apple (on iPhone) or Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging (on Android) assigns to your phone to receive notifications, and a delivery log of the ones sent.
- SOS text numbers: the name and number of up to three people without the app, if you add them.
- Trial and subscription: the end date of the free trial, which our server sets when you create your profile, Apple’s or Google Play’s signed receipt of your purchase, which the server checks to know until when your plan is active, and “Gift a year” codes.
- Sign-in: if you link your account to recover it on another phone, the identifier from Sign in with Apple or Google, or the email address we send the sign-in code to.
Your location
Location is the most sensitive data the app handles, and we treat it that way.
When it’s read. Only if you’ve set a check-in time or a return time, and only around that moment: from one hour before until the end of the grace period. And when you hold down SOS.
Outside those windows the app doesn’t read it.
If you don’t grant permission the app still works, but if an alert goes out your loved ones won’t know where you are.
Who it’s shared with. Only your contacts, and only in two cases: in automatic alerts, if you don’t check in by your time or return time or if your phone stays quiet, and with SOS.
The low-battery alert doesn’t include your location.
Never with an ordinary “I’m okay”.
In an alert, the location is a Google Maps link.
How long it stays. Location points are deleted after 48 hours.
The location attached to an alert or an SOS is deleted after 7 days: only the fact that there was an alert remains.
I’m Okay is not a tracking app: nobody can see where you are at any given moment, us included.
SOS and text messages
SOS alerts all your contacts with your location and then opens a call to the emergency number, unless you’ve turned that off.
If you’ve added numbers of people without the app, your phone opens a ready-written text with your location: you send it yourself, from your phone, by tapping Send.
We don’t send text messages and don’t use any outside service to do so.
If SOS went off by mistake, right afterwards you can tap “It was a mistake”: your contacts are told and the alert stays marked as a false alarm.
Legal basis
We process the data to provide the service you ask for by using the app (Art. 6(1)(b) of Regulation (EU) 2016/679).
We only read your location if you grant the permission on your phone, and you can withdraw it whenever you like.
We also keep purchase receipts for tax obligations.
Minimum age
I’m Okay is for people aged 16 or over.
The app checks this with your date of birth and won’t let anyone younger continue, and the server runs the same check.
Where the data is and who processes it for us
- Supabase, which hosts our server’s database and functions, in a data centre in the European Union.
- Apple Push Notification service on iPhone and Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging on Android, which deliver notifications. The text of a notification, for example the name of whoever tapped “I’m okay” or the location link in an alert, passes through them.
- Apple, for Sign in with Apple and App Store purchases, and Google, for Google Play purchases and if you choose to link your account with Google. Each processes data under its own privacy policy.
- Vercel, which hosts this website, and PostHog, on servers in the European Union, which counts visits to the website.
Payment details never reach STARS S.R.L.: the subscription goes through the App Store or Google Play and is managed by Apple and Google.
We don’t sell data and don’t pass it to anyone for advertising.
The app contains no third-party analytics, advertising or crash-reporting tools.
This website
The imokay.pro website uses no cookies, stores nothing in your browser and doesn’t ask for personal data.
To know how many people visit it we use PostHog, on servers in the European Union.
It counts page views and which site you came from, without cookies, with your IP address anonymised and without recognising you from one visit to the next.
It doesn’t record what you do on the page and doesn’t build profiles.
Like any website, the server briefly logs visitors’ IP address and browser, for security and to run the service.
Subscription
You can try I’m Okay free for three days, with every feature.
The trial is run by our server: it starts when you create your profile, without going through the store and with no card, and it doesn’t restart.
You get a notification the day before it ends.
After that it costs €0.99 a year, renewing automatically; you cancel it from your App Store settings or Google Play subscriptions.
With “Gift a year” you can buy a year for someone else, also for €0.99: you get a code to send them.
How long data stays
- Location points: 48 hours.
- Location in alerts: 7 days, after which only the fact of the alert remains.
- “I’m okay” log: 8 days.
- Notification delivery log: 30 days.
- History of changes made by someone with permission to set up your app: 90 days.
- Pause dates: until you remove the pause, or three days after it ends.
- Profile, contacts, times and preferences: as long as you use the app, or until you delete your account.
How to delete it
From Settings › “Delete account” you permanently delete your name, code, contacts, times, alerts and everything else linked to your account; your contacts stop receiving your notifications.
Deleting your account doesn’t cancel your subscription: cancel that from the store.
You can also remove a contact, change your SOS text numbers or your phone number from your profile, and turn off location or notification access in your phone’s settings.
Your rights
Under Articles 15–22 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) you have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict its processing, to object, and to receive it in a portable format.
You can do a lot of this directly in the app; for anything else write to us at info@stars.srl or by certified email at stars@namirialpec.it: we reply within one month, as Article 12 GDPR requires.
You always have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, or with the authority in your country.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes how it handles data, this policy changes with it.
The date at the bottom of the page shows the latest revision.
